You have a massive number of Roman ruins throughout the region-- the Huns were defeated in this area, fer crying out loud.

Dungeons easily become the basements and catacombs of lost Roman villas, the aquaducts and cisterns cut into the hills, all that good stuff with an ancient Empire (and the pre-Imperial Gaulish holy sites, standing stones and dolmens) baked right in for good measure.Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06767095029126872887noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5831219200072513986.post-88216512376714583182011-11-30T19:22:52.790-05:002011-11-30T19:22:52.790-05:00Side note-- Beziers is the source of the phrase, &...Side note-- Beziers is the source of the phrase, "Kill them all and let God sort them out."

It was said by the Papal Legate as the Cathars took refuge in a church. The Count of Toulouse fought right up to the bitter end.

Averoigne is really a big chunk of the Massif Central and there's less there than the open crazy warfare going on in Toulousain and Languedoc. Gascony and Aquitaine are English holdings at this time (Richard the Lionhearted operated out of Bayonne at the foot of the Pyrenees on the French side for most of his rule.)

There's the Basque in this area, too, and they act as an excellent insular, almost pagan group in the region.

There's Andorra in the Pyrenees and the conflict there with the Bishop and the Count of Foix.

And you have the Muslim pirates who raided the area and operated out of north Africa (Tangiers) and the Balearic islands (southeast of Montpellier).

Along with all of this, you have a lot of knightly orders-- the Templars, the Hospitallers, the Order of St. James of the Cross, a couple of smaller ones, all in this area supporting the (4th or 5th) Crusades and protecting the pilgrims travelling across the region on one of the 5 routes to Santiago de Compostella-- the third most popular pilgrimage after Rome and Jerusalem. One of the routes actually goes through a natural tunnel with an inn built inside. Add to the usual highwayman shenanigans the fact that the Pyrenees were said to be the lair of an enormous dragon. Hercules traveled along the southern coast while performing his 12 tasks.

There's a reason most old school fantasy campaigns look like this region at this time with the fractious independent nobility, the barbarians, the conquering kings, the knights-- Provence at this time is the template from which other stock fantasy worlds are wrought.Benhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06767095029126872887noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5831219200072513986.post-85674502961108256812011-11-30T19:14:46.279-05:002011-11-30T19:14:46.279-05:00Also:
